Tirokudda Kanda &#8211; Hungry Shades Outside the Walls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Outside the walls they stand,<br \/>\n&amp; at crossroads.<br \/>\nAt door posts they stand,<br \/>\nreturning to their old homes.<br \/>\nBut when a meal with plentiful food &amp; drink is served,<br \/>\nno one remembers them:<br \/>\nSuch is the kamma of living beings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Thus those who feel sympathy for their dead relatives<br \/>\ngive timely donations of proper food &amp; drink<br \/>\n&#8212; exquisite, clean &#8212;<br \/>\n[thinking:] &#8220;May this be for our relatives.<br \/>\nMay our relatives be happy!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">And those who have gathered there,<br \/>\nthe assembled shades of the relatives,<br \/>\nwith appreciation give their blessing<br \/>\nfor the plentiful food &amp; drink:<br \/>\n&#8220;May our relatives live long<br \/>\nbecause of whom we have gained [this gift].<br \/>\nWe have been honored,<br \/>\nand the donors are not without reward!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">For there [in their realm] there&#8217;s<br \/>\nno farming,<br \/>\nno herding of cattle,<br \/>\nno commerce,<br \/>\nno trading with money.<br \/>\nThey live on what is given here,<br \/>\nhungry shades<br \/>\nwhose time here is done.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">As water raining on a hill<br \/>\nflows down to the valley,<br \/>\neven so does what is given here<br \/>\nbenefit the dead.<br \/>\nAs rivers full of water<br \/>\nfill the ocean full,<br \/>\neven so does what is given here<br \/>\nbenefit the dead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;He gave to me, she acted on my behalf,<br \/>\nthey were my relatives, companions, friends&#8221;:<br \/>\nOfferings should be given for the dead<br \/>\nwhen one reflects thus<br \/>\non things done in the past.<br \/>\nFor no weeping,<br \/>\nno sorrowing<br \/>\nno other lamentation<br \/>\nbenefits the dead<br \/>\nwhose relatives persist in that way.<br \/>\nBut when this offering is given, well-placed in the Sangha,<br \/>\nit works for their long-term benefit<br \/>\nand they profit immediately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">In this way the proper duty to relatives has been shown,<br \/>\ngreat honor has been done to the dead,<br \/>\nand monks have been given strength:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">The merit you&#8217;ve acquired<br \/>\nisn&#8217;t small.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>8. Nidhi Kanda &#8211; The Reserve Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">A person stashes a fund away,<br \/>\ndeep underground, at the water line:<br \/>\n&#8220;When a need or duty arises,<br \/>\nthis will provide for my needs,<br \/>\nfor my release if I&#8217;m denounced by the king,<br \/>\nmolested by thieves,<br \/>\nin case of debt, famine, or accidents.&#8221;<br \/>\nWith aims like this<br \/>\nin the world<br \/>\na reserve fund is stashed away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">But no matter how well it&#8217;s stored,<br \/>\ndeep underground, at the water line,<br \/>\nit won&#8217;t all always serve one&#8217;s need.<br \/>\nThe fund gets shifted from its place,<br \/>\nor one&#8217;s memory gets confused;<br \/>\nor &#8212; unseen &#8212;<br \/>\nwater serpents make off with it,<br \/>\nspirits steal it,<br \/>\nor hateful heirs run off with it.<br \/>\nWhen one&#8217;s merit&#8217;s ended,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s totally destroyed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">But when a man or woman<br \/>\nhas laid aside a well-stored fund<br \/>\nof generosity, virtue,<br \/>\nrestraint, &amp; self-control,<br \/>\nwith regard to a shrine,<br \/>\nthe Sangha,<br \/>\na fine individual,<br \/>\nguests,<br \/>\nmother, father,<br \/>\nor elder sibling:<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s a well-stored fund.<br \/>\nIt can&#8217;t be wrested away.<br \/>\nIt follows you along.<br \/>\nWhen, having left this world,<br \/>\nfor wherever you must go,<br \/>\nyou take it with you.<br \/>\nThis fund is not held in common with others,<br \/>\n&amp; cannot be stolen by thieves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">So, prudent, you should make merit,<br \/>\nthe fund that will follow you along.<br \/>\nThis is the fund<br \/>\nthat gives all they want<br \/>\nto beings human, divine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Whatever devas aspire to,<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nA fine complexion, fine voice,<br \/>\na body well-built, well-formed,<br \/>\nlordship, a following:<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nEarthly kingship, supremacy,<br \/>\nthe bliss of an emperor,<br \/>\nkingship over devas in the heavens:<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nThe attainment of the human state,<br \/>\nany delight in heaven,<br \/>\nthe attainment of Unbinding:<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nExcellent friends,<br \/>\nappropriate application, [1]<br \/>\nmastery of clear knowing &amp; release: [2]<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nAcumen, [3] emancipations, [4]<br \/>\nthe perfection of disciplehood:<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<br \/>\nPrivate Awakening, [5]<br \/>\nBuddhahood:<br \/>\nall that is gained by this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">So powerful is this,<br \/>\nthe accomplishment of merit.<br \/>\nThus the wise, the prudent,<br \/>\npraise the fund of merit<br \/>\nalready made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">1. Proper practice of the Dhamma.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">2. Clear knowing = knowledge of previous lives, knowledge of the passing away and arising (rebirth) of beings, knowledge of the ending of the mental effluents: sensual passion, becoming, views, ignorance. Release = release from the cycle of rebirth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">3. Acumen = acumen with regard to the Dhamma, to its meaning, to language, &amp; to quick-wittedness. These four talents are found in some, but not all, Arahants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">4. Emancipations. The Maha Nidana Suttanta [DN 15] describes the eight emancipations as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Possessed of form, one sees forms. This is the first emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Not percipient of form internally, one sees forms externally. This is the second emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;One is intent only on the beautiful. This is the third emancipation. With the complete transcending of perceptions of [physical] form, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, and not heeding perceptions of diversity, thinking, &#8216;Infinite space,&#8217; one enters and remains in the sphere of the infinitude of space. This is the fourth emancipation. With the complete transcending of the sphere of the infinitude of space, thinking, &#8216;Infinite consciousness,&#8217; one enters and remains in the sphere of the infinitude of consciousness. This is the fifth emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;With the complete transcending of the sphere of the infinitude of consciousness, thinking, &#8216;There is nothing,&#8217; one enters and remains in the sphere of nothingness. This is the sixth emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;With the complete transcending of the sphere of nothingness, one enters and remains in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the seventh emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;With the complete transcending of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. This is the eighth emancipation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Now, when a monk attains these eight emancipations in forward order, in reverse order, in forward and reverse order, when he attains them and emerges from them wherever he wants, however he wants, and for as long as he wants, when through the ending of the mental fermentations he enters and remains in the fermentation-free release of awareness and release of discernment, having directly known it and realized it in the here and now, he is said to be a monk released in both ways. And as for another release in both ways, higher or more sublime than this, there is none.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">5. Private Awakening: Awakening as a Private Buddha, one who can gain Awakening without relying on the teachings of others, but who cannot formulate the Dhamma in the way a Full Buddha can.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>9.
